About Us

Why Sustainable Build Blog?

If you’ve made it to this page, I believe we both share an interest in sustainable self-build and DIY. I created Sustainable Build Blog to discuss construction which has the potential to bring wider benefits to society, the economy and the environment, whilst at the same time benefiting ourselves and those we care about. This blog takes the view that we could all do our part to consider the materials and methodologies used to build and adapt our homes. We all live busy lives, so I’ve decided to do the hard work for you!

It is my hope that within Sustainable Build Blog you may find an inspiring idea or course which sparks your interest. You may consider a recommendation which ensures your project contributes towards a more sustainable built environment.

What will you discover at Sustainable Build Blog?

“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together”. (George Eliot)

If together we all take action, no matter how small, the overall impact has the potential to be immense.

Who am I?

Hello! I’m Laura Winter and I’m a Chartered Building Surveyor based in Kent, England. Over the course of my career I have taken a keen interest in sustainable procurement and construction and am the author of the RICS ISURV Sustainable Procurement section. Through my work I have seen firsthand the positive impact that small sustainable decisions can have, not only on the environment, but also for people in and around our buildings. If my blog can help challenge what has become the accepted status-quo and make us all think a little deeper about even our DIY decisions, it will go a little way to improve the world we live in, as well as put a huge smile on my face.

What is my ultimate goal?

One day when the funds have been raised, I plan to construct my very own sustainable self-build home. Sustainable Build Blog therefore also serves as a collection of the knowledge, ideas and inspirations I have collected whilst my husband and I save up the pennies! Hopefully in the not-so-distant future, I will be in a position to share a real-time blog of my very own self-build, from inception through to completion!

Thank you for visiting.
